‘The Field of Radiance’
R100 x Foxhouse artist residency

Trung Bao x Karolina Olech

My partner, Karolina Olech (Chiwawa), and I had the privilege of participating in an art residency program in Spain called the R100 x Fox House. This residency was dedicated to the concept of permission, offering us a unique opportunity to fully immerse ourselves in the present moment. Within this nurturing environment, we found the freedom to embrace our authentic selves, free from the usual demands of daily life. Despite the inherent challenge of staying present amidst life's complexities, the tranquil atmosphere of the residency provided us with the space and encouragement to explore the intersection of art, philosophy, technology, and, above all, the collective journey of creative pursuit. Our interactions with fellow artists and thinkers were profoundly enriching, and we are deeply grateful to everyone involved for making this experience so memorable.

Leaving our home countries opened our eyes to the beauty around us that we often miss. While we once overlooked history and culture, living abroad ignited a curiosity within us. Rather than dwell on past ignorance, we’re eager to explore and embrace our heritage with renewed hope.

"The Field of Radiance” by Trung Bao & Karolina Olech (Chiwawa) pays homage to Polish folk music, drawing from its vibrant energy and the tradition of human interactions. Rooted in collective voices, folk singing mirrors diverse occasions, from joyful celebrations to poignant farewells. Deeply intertwined with nature, it resonates with expansive landscapes and echoes that traverse fields, alongside the sounds of animals and winds rustling through trees. Imperfections in a singer's voice, like cracks and textures, enhance its allure. In this craft, everyone participates, each contributing their unique touch, regardless of proficiency level.

Beyond cultural tribute, the piece explores the therapeutic power of voices and their very capacity to traverse expansive landscapes. In a world of tight closed apartaments and busy minds, reconnecting with nature and centering on our own voices can facilitate energy release and healing. Whether through a profound exhale or the gentle strains of a melody, every voice is a vessel of expression, a means to cleanse our minds and bodies.

The audio-visual tech behind the piece serves as a ceremonial connection between humans and their environment. Through innovative technology, the visual aspect of the piece bridges the artists with their inspiring surroundings, capturing the unique sonic and vocal gestural mark making process. Each brush stroke and texture on screen is sourced directly from the local landscapes experienced by the artists during their residency, driven by the distinct qualities found in the vocals and instrumentals
